The details

Darning is the repair that keeps a favourite pair of socks or a worn jumper elbow in use instead of in the bin. This is the tool side of it: a wooden darning mushroom to support the fabric, a darning comb for packing stitches down evenly, needles sized for yarn rather than sewing thread, and a tin to keep it all together.

The darning mushroom does more work than it looks like it should. Pushing the domed head up under a hole from inside the garment holds the fabric taut and rounded, which stops the repair puckering as the needle goes through — the difference between a neat mend and a lumpy one. The comb then taps each row of stitches snug against the last, so the darned patch ends up dense enough to wear rather than loose enough to catch.

Thread is not included. That is deliberate rather than a gap: darning yarn wants to match the weight and fibre of whatever you are mending, so a tin of assorted colours is usually the wrong colour. Any darning yarn, wool scraps from another project, or a sashiko thread if you want the repair to show will all work with these needles.

It suits socks, wool jumpers, knitwear and denim rather than delicate or synthetic performance fabrics. A good gift for someone who already mends, or someone who has been meaning to start.

Why we stock it

  • Darning mushroom keeps fabric taut for a neat, pucker-free repair

  • Darning comb packs each row of stitches down for a patch dense enough to wear

  • Needles sized for darning yarn rather than fine sewing thread

  • Stores in its own tin, so the needles stay together and stay sharp

Good to know

Does this include thread or yarn?

No — this is the tool kit only. We left thread out on purpose, because darning yarn should match the weight and fibre of the garment you're mending, and an assorted pack is usually the wrong match. Any darning yarn or wool scrap works with these needles.

Do I need any sewing experience to use this?

No. Darning is a simple over-and-under weave across the hole, and the mushroom holds everything in place while you learn. Your first few will look handmade, which is rather the point.

How do I use the darning mushroom?

Push the domed head up underneath the hole from inside the garment, which holds the fabric taut and rounded while you stitch, helping avoid puckering.

What fabrics does it work best on?

Knitted wool, socks and denim darn well. Very delicate or synthetic performance fabrics can be trickier to mend this way.
